History of RSS

The RSS is a national volunteer organization that spreads Hindutva ideology. Its purpose is to promote Indian culture and values while fostering the Hindu community. The RSS was founded in 1925 to strengthen the Hindu community and provide character training through Hindu discipline.

The organization is one of the major and leading players in the Hindu nationalist movement. The Indian government has banned RSS several times in the past, including during the Emergency (1977-1978) and again in 1992 after the demolition of the Babri Masjid. Its founder, “Hedgewar”, was a political protege of B. S. Moonje, a Tilakite Congressman and a social activist from Nagpur.
